Introduction to the Cohort
The Honolulu Asia Aging Study (HAAS) grew out of the Honolulu Heart Program, a longitudinal study of cardiovascular disease, begun in 1965, among 8,006 Japanese-American men living on Oahu, Hawaii, USA and who were born between 1900 and 1919. After their baseline evaluations, members of the cohort were evaluated at 1967-1970 and 1971-1974. At the fourth clinical evaluation (1991-1993), investigators introduced screening for dementia, establishing the HAAS, which included 3,508 men who were then free of dementia. Follow-up examinations occurred in 1994-1996, 1997-1999, and 1999-2000.

Ethnicity Breakdown
All members of the HAAS cohort are Japanese-American.
